During the reception for friends Catarina and Dwight's wedding, I spoke with Bobby about life in Espanola. He explained that it is a very tight, close-knit community where their culture and family came first. Here in this picture, his mother comes up and shares how much she loves her son. She then put her hands on his chest and said, "The heart inside this man is the most beautiful."
Many think low-riding starting in California, it actually began in Espanola, New Mexico I was driving down the road and came across this young kid driving a red car cruising down the main drag. As I drove next to him, I was staring at him, trying to get a read on if it was ok to get his attention, by that time it was too late. He rolled down his window and asked me what my problem was. As we drove down the road, I explained to him, with windows down while driving 30mph, that I am working on a photographic project of low-riders in Espanola and I wanted to get his photograph. He considered it for a bit, then cautiously pulled over into the next parking lot. There are so many "things" in our world that have been discarded, considered no value to repair or just forgotten. The irony of all of these casted objects is that they still imbue beauty, they almost radiate subtle life still embedded within them, waiting for someone to quietly capture their essence. Along a solitary road in rural New Mexico, this couple stands waiting for their ride. they were celebrating the wedding of Catarina and Dwight but said it was getting late and they needed to start heading home.
On the outskirts of Espanola, NM is the Sikh Temple of Yogi Bhajan. Walking up to the front gate, I noticed there was no security guard on duty, they were talking to someone inside the compound. Quietly sneaking past them, I came to a vast garden with statues. As I walked closer one of them moved. It was a woman sitting on the grass motionless and for a moment she turned her head and placed her arm on the grass. #resourcemag
It isnt very common for women to own their own cars. I came across this woman named Gina who drove her car with pride.
